Mission My Mission of teaching people to play golf -- not teaching golf to people -- is to increase a golfer's satisfaction and happiness by making golf easier to learn and more fun to play. Teaching Philosophy My Philosophy is simple and based on the premise that golf is a game and should be enjoyed. Learning and playing golf should be fun, and playing good golf is lots of fun. There are no "secrets" ... the swing is a fairly simple back and forth movement … if you focus your attention on the right things. Structured practice, directed at repeating the correct things, is the only ticket to better performance. Most people who already play golf have a swing that is like a suitcase with too many items packed into it. They have taken a fairly simple swing back and swing through, and created way too many angles and unnecessary movements. Most of you already have a good swing in there -- just look at your practice swings! Rather than attempt to change your swing, I will remove the blockages, surplus motions and angles from your swing. Then, how you can be your own coach to remind yourself when those bad habits creep back. I believe there is no such thing as a lesson plan that fits everyone. I believe the lesson must be tailored to the student. A student's goals and history with the game are a driving force in his/her ability to advance their game. As a golf teacher I have to learn how you learn best. The teacher as learner? That's what communication is all about. I learn how you learn, and then we can progress faster. The best teachers are the best communicators. I must be flexible -- be trained and competent in different strategies and be able to apply those strategies at different times for different students. I recognize that all golfers do not have the same learning styles or physical abilities, nor do they learn at the same pace. People learn in many different ways and there is a best way for each one of us. Some students learn best by club awareness, some learn best through body awareness, and others learn best with a more "holistic" picture of the swing or shot to be played. I must tailor my teaching to that individual's way of learning. Lessons are about the student. I have two eyes, two ears and only one mouth. They should be used in the same proportions. There is an old Chinese proverb on learning that goes something like this:
"I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I learn."
Accordingly, my teaching will include explanations and why; demonstrations, video review, or visual images; and then lots of drills and use of training aids to feel the motion needed.
The simple stuff controls the complex stuff. I believe that this is the best place to start. It's very important to have a very good understanding of the fundamentals and I'll make sure you get a good dose of the pre-shot fundamentals (HAPPY = Holding the club, Alignment, Posture, ball Position, and whY do I play? To relax and go to the target). I use exercises, drills and training aids because people learn five times faster that way! Drills done correctly and training aids used precisely train us in the proper motion of swinging a golf club. Some drills are good for each and every one of us for our entire golfing life, because they create perfect practice. Practice doesn't make perfect; practice makes permanent. Only perfect practice makes perfect.
